The aim of the proposed workshop is to examine the roles of German-speaking populations in East Central Europe from the 1840s to the 1920s. It focuses on identities, loyalties, and belonging in multiethnic settings, asking how Germans responded to imperial crises, national awakenings, and war. Guided by the themes of ties, hopes, and fears, the workshop explores adaptation, privilege, and marginalization in a time of profound political and social transformation.
